Aged Ginger Skin Pieces (Zingiber officinale) are the dried outer peels of mature ginger rhizomes, long valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for their warming, regulating, and fluid-dispersing properties. Known in TCM as Lao Jiang Pi, aged ginger skin is considered milder and more dispersing than the inner rhizome, with a particular ability to promote urination, reduce swelling, move surface fluids, and harmonize the body’s exterior. It is traditionally used to treat edema, puffiness, water retention, and superficial cold-damp accumulation, while gently supporting the Spleen and Stomach without the strong heat of fresh ginger.

In classical practice, aged ginger skin is regarded as pungent and mildly warm, entering the Lung, Spleen, and Bladder channels. It helps regulate qi in the surface layers of the body, disperse mild cold, and encourage the movement of trapped fluids. Unlike the flesh of ginger, which stimulates internal warmth, the peel focuses on fluid metabolism and subtle circulation, making it useful in formulas for edema around the limbs or face, difficulty urinating due to cold-damp, and mild digestive bloating.

In folk medicine, aged ginger skin decoctions are used as external washes for bruises, cold-induced pain, or localized swelling, and are sometimes added to warming foot baths to promote circulation and gently open the pores.

Modern analysis shows that ginger skin contains volatile oils, phenols, and flavonoids, similar to the rhizome but in a lighter, more surface-acting concentration. These contribute to its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and microcirculation-enhancing effects, reflecting its traditional role as a gentle dispersing and fluid-regulating herb.

Each batch of Aged Ginger Skin Pieces (Zingiber officinale) is carefully removed from mature ginger rhizomes and dried to preserve its aroma, warmth, and active compounds. When decocted, it yields a light, warming infusion used to promote urination, reduce swelling, and harmonize the body’s surface

Also Known As: Lao Jiang Pi, Old Ginger Peel, Aged Ginger Skin, Ginger Peel, Cortex Zingiberis

Nutrients: Gingerols (reduced in the peel compared to fresh root), shogaols, essential oils (zingiberene, bisabolene), flavonoids, phenolic compounds, trace minerals

Notes: n Traditional Chinese Medicine, Lao Jiang Pi is used to promote urination, reduce swelling, disperse exterior cold, and move water circulation. It is milder and more diuretic than fresh ginger, making it useful for edema, bloating, and superficial water retention, as well as mild cold sensations. Often added to decoctions where the goal is to move fluids rather than strongly warm the interior. Compared to fresh ginger peel, aged ginger skin is more drying, more aromatic, and better for damp-related conditions. Caution: Avoid with yin deficiency, dry constitution, or heat signs. Use cautiously during pregnancy.
