Spider Brake Fern Whole (Pteris multifida) is the dried whole frond of a delicate fern traditionally used in Chinese and East Asian herbal medicine for its cooling, detoxifying, and anti-inflammatory properties. Known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as Feng Wei Cao, meaning “Wind-Tail Herb,” this plant has long been valued for its ability to clear heat, remove toxins, and support respiratory and urinary health.
In TCM, Spider Brake Fern is regarded as sweet, slightly bitter, and cool, entering the Lung and Liver channels. It is used to clear heat, stop bleeding, and promote urination, making it an important herb in formulas for bronchitis, coughs, fevers, sore throat, and urinary tract inflammation. It is also employed to detoxify the blood and relieve swelling, both internally and externally.
Folk herbalists have traditionally used Pteris multifida in decoctions, poultices, and cleansing teas to soothe burns, skin irritations, and wounds, or to support lung health during seasonal imbalances. The fresh fronds were often used as a gentle antipyretic and detoxifying tonic.
Modern research identifies flavonoids, terpenoids, and phenolic acids in Pteris multifida, which exhibit antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects. These constituents support the fern’s traditional uses for respiratory, liver, and skin health, confirming its role as a mild heat-clearing and cleansing herb.
Each batch of Spider Brake Fern Whole (Pteris multifida) is carefully harvested and naturally dried to preserve its feathery green fronds, fresh aroma, and active phytochemicals. When brewed, it produces a light, grassy, cooling infusion used in herbal detox teas or heat-clearing formulas.
