Rhubarb Root & Rhizome Whole (Rheum palmatum), known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Da Huang (大黄), is a bitter, cold, and strongly purgative herb traditionally used to clear heat, purge accumulations, invigorate blood, and eliminate toxins. Harvested from the thick, fibrous root and rhizome of the Chinese rhubarb plant, these whole pieces retain their deep reddish-brown color, strong aroma, and potent action.
In TCM, Da Huang is used to stimulate bowel movements and relieve constipation, particularly in cases involving heat and stagnation in the intestines. Beyond its purgative function, it is also used to clear damp-heat, cool the blood, and break up blood stasis, making it useful for treating conditions like abdominal fullness, jaundice, painful swellings, and traumatic injuries.
When decocted, Rhubarb Root & Rhizome produces a strong, bitter infusion with a fast-acting effect on the digestive system. It is often paired with herbs such as Mang Xiao (Mirabilite), Huang Lian (Coptis), or Tao Ren (Peach Seed) in classical formulas for heat-clearing and detoxification. For blood stasis, it may be combined with Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark) or Chi Shao (Red Peony Root).
Each batch of Rhubarb Root & Rhizome Whole (Rheum palmatum) is carefully aged, dried, and preserved to enhance its effectiveness and reduce harshness, as aging is traditionally believed to temper its purgative intensity. Whether used in strong bowel-clearing decoctions, detoxifying blends, or blood-invigorating formulas, Da Huang offers a powerful and time-honored method to eliminate heat, relieve stagnation, and restore internal balance.
Note: This herb is very strong and should be used with caution. It is typically prescribed in small doses and not recommended for long-term or unsupervised use.
