Burnet Root Pieces (Sanguisorba officinalis) are the dried root sections of a traditional medicinal plant widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name Dì Yú (地榆). This herb is highly valued for its ability to cool the blood, stop bleeding, clear heat, and resolve toxicity, making it especially important for conditions involving bleeding with heat, inflammation, and tissue damage. Its nature is bitter, sour, and slightly cold, giving it a focused action on blood-level heat and excess bleeding.
In TCM, Di Yu enters the Liver, Large Intestine, and Stomach channels, where it helps cool blood heat, stop bleeding, and reduce inflammation. It is traditionally used for bloody stools, hemorrhoids, uterine bleeding, vomiting blood, nosebleeds, and burns or scalds, particularly when bleeding is accompanied by heat, swelling, or pain. Its ability to both stop bleeding and clear heat makes it especially effective in acute bleeding conditions.
Burnet Root is also widely used externally for burns, scalds, wounds, ulcers, and skin inflammation, where it helps cool tissue, reduce pain, promote healing, and prevent infection. In many classical texts, Di Yu is regarded as a key herb for heat-induced skin damage and bleeding wounds.
Modern research shows that Sanguisorba officinalis contains tannins, saponins, flavonoids, and anti-inflammatory compounds with documented hemostatic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and wound-healing effects. These constituents strongly support its traditional applications for bleeding control, inflammation reduction, and tissue repair.
Each batch of Burnet Root Pieces (Sanguisorba officinalis) is carefully harvested and cut to preserve their dark brown color, firm texture, and astringent medicinal profile. When decocted, they produce a bitter, astringent, cooling infusion traditionally used to cool the blood, stop bleeding, clear heat, and support healing of inflamed or damaged tissues.

Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Di Yu is used to cool the blood, stop bleeding, clear heat, and heal burns and sores. It is commonly applied for intestinal bleeding, hemorrhoids, excessive uterine bleeding, and skin injuries such as burns and ulcers. Bitter, sour, and slightly cold in nature, it has a strong astringent effect and is also used externally in washes or powders to promote tissue repair and reduce inflammation. The sliced form allows for controlled dosing and even extraction in decoctions.
