Chinese Gentian Root Whole (Gentiana scabra) is the dried root traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name Lóng Dǎn Cǎo (龙胆草). This intensely bitter and cold herb is prized for its powerful ability to drain Liver and Gallbladder fire, clear damp-heat, and resolve toxin, particularly in conditions marked by inflammation, irritability, and excess heat in the upper or lower body. Its strong downward-directing action makes it one of the primary herbs for clearing excess heat from the Liver system.
In TCM, Long Dan Cao enters the Liver and Gallbladder channels, where it is traditionally used for red, painful eyes, headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, bitter taste in the mouth, flank pain, and irritability associated with Liver fire. It is also highly valued for clearing damp-heat from the lower burner, including burning urination, genital itching, abnormal discharge, and inflammatory reproductive conditions. Its pronounced bitterness helps dry dampness while its cold nature drains intense heat.
Chinese Gentian Root is frequently included in classical formulas such as those designed to subdue hyperactive Liver yang and drain excess fire, especially when symptoms are acute, red, swollen, or aggravated by emotional stress. Because of its strength, it is usually combined with protective herbs to safeguard digestion and prevent excessive cooling.
Modern research shows that Gentiana scabra root contains gentiopicroside, swertiamarin, iridoid glycosides, xanthones, and anti-inflammatory compounds with documented hepatoprotective, bile-stimulating, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects. These constituents support its traditional role in liver detoxification, inflammation control, and damp-heat resolution.
Each batch of Chinese Gentian Root Whole (Gentiana scabra) is carefully harvested and dried to preserve its firm root structure, pale interior, and intensely bitter medicinal profile. When decocted, it produces a strong, deeply bitter, cooling infusion traditionally used to drain Liver fire, clear damp-heat, reduce inflammation, and restore balance in excess heat conditions.

Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Long Dan Cao is used to clear heat and dry dampness, especially from the liver and gallbladder channels. It is commonly applied for damp-heat conditions such as jaundice, genital itching or discharge, urinary difficulty, red or swollen eyes, headache, irritability, and hypochondriac pain. Very bitter and cold in nature, it has a strong descending and heat-clearing action. Typically used in short-term formulas for excess heat patterns rather than long-term tonic use. The root is decocted and often combined with other herbs in classical formulas such as Long Dan Xie Gan Tang.
