Japanese Catnip Whole (Schizonepeta tenuifolia) is the dried aerial herb of a classic aromatic plant widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) known as Jīng Jiè (荆芥). This versatile herb is valued for its ability to release the exterior, dispel wind, alleviate itching, and stop bleeding, making it useful across both early-stage exterior conditions and certain bleeding patterns. Its nature is acrid and slightly warm, with a light, dispersing quality that allows it to move quickly through the surface and blood levels.
In TCM, Jing Jie enters the Lung and Liver channels, where it helps expel wind, relieve the exterior, and ease symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, sore throat, and body aches, especially at the onset of wind-cold or wind-heat conditions. It is also traditionally used for skin itching, rashes, hives, and measles, where wind is a contributing factor. Its gentle warmth helps release pathogens without damaging healthy qi.
A unique characteristic of Japanese Catnip is its dual application for bleeding disorders. When lightly charred, it is used to stop bleeding, particularly for epistaxis, blood in the stool, uterine bleeding, or excessive menstrual flow, demonstrating its ability to act at both the exterior and blood levels depending on preparation.
In folk practice, Schizonepeta is commonly brewed as a warming, aromatic tea to support the body during seasonal changes, helping prevent wind invasion and soothe mild inflammatory discomfort. It is also included in skin washes and topical preparations to calm itching and irritation.
Modern research shows that Schizonepeta tenuifolia contains volatile oils, flavonoids, menthone, pulegone, and anti-inflammatory compounds with documented antipyretic, anti-allergic, antimicrobial, and circulation-supporting effects. These constituents support its traditional roles in wind dispersion, inflammation reduction, and skin comfort.
Each batch of Japanese Catnip Whole (Schizonepeta tenuifolia) is carefully harvested and dried to preserve its leafy stems, aromatic fragrance, and light dispersing energy. When decocted, it produces a fragrant, mildly warming infusion traditionally used to release the exterior, dispel wind, relieve itching, and support comfort during early-stage colds and allergic reactions.
