Rehmannia Root Pieces (Prepared) (Rehmannia glutinosa) are the traditionally steamed and processed form of rehmannia root used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) known as Shú Dì Huáng (熟地黄). Through repeated steaming—often with rice wine—the raw root is transformed into a deeply nourishing, warming, and blood-enriching tonic. Prepared Rehmannia is prized for its ability to tonify blood, nourish yin, replenish essence, and strengthen the Liver and Kidneys, making it a foundational herb for long-term rebuilding and deficiency patterns. Its nature is sweet, rich, and slightly warm, with a heavy, deeply restorative character.
In TCM, Shu Di Huang enters the Liver and Kidney channels, where it helps replenish blood and essence, strengthen the lower back and knees, support reproductive health, and ease dizziness or tinnitus associated with deficiency. It is traditionally used for blood deficiency, anemia-like patterns, irregular menstruation, paleness, fatigue, insomnia, night sweats, and weakness of the lumbar region, especially when depletion has occurred from aging, overwork, or chronic illness.
Prepared Rehmannia is also valued for its role in nourishing yin while supporting essence (jing), making it central to formulas addressing premature aging, hair graying, dryness, infertility patterns, and developmental weakness. Unlike raw rehmannia, it does not strongly clear heat, but instead builds deep reserves, supporting long-term vitality and resilience.
In folk and classical practice, Shu Di Huang is simmered into tonic broths, restorative decoctions, and longevity formulas, often combined with herbs such as angelica, peony, goji, or eucommia to enhance its blood- and essence-building effects.
Modern research shows that Rehmannia glutinosa contains iridoid glycosides, polysaccharides, amino acids, and antioxidant compounds with documented hematopoietic, neuroprotective, immune-supportive, and endocrine-regulating effects. These constituents support its traditional role in blood nourishment, hormonal balance, and long-term restorative care.
Each batch of Rehmannia Root Pieces (Prepared) (Rehmannia glutinosa) is carefully processed and sliced to preserve its dark, glossy appearance, sticky texture, and rich, sweet-earthy aroma. When decocted, it produces a thick, sweet, deeply nourishing infusion traditionally used to rebuild blood, nourish yin, replenish essence, and strengthen the Liver and Kidneys.
Also Known As: Shu Di Huang, Prepared Rehmannia Root, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata
Nutrients: Iridoid glycosides, polysaccharides, amino acids, caramelized sugars formed during processing, and trace minerals
Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shu Di is used to nourish blood, enrich yin, tonify essence, and support marrow. The preparation process transforms raw Rehmannia into a deeply nourishing, warming, and tonic herb. It is commonly used for blood deficiency, dizziness, palpitations, dry complexion, lower back weakness, tinnitus, and reproductive or vitality depletion. Thick, rich, and grounding in nature, Shu Di is a cornerstone herb in classical tonic formulas and is often combined with Dang Gui, Bai Shao, or Shan Zhu Yu to build blood and essence.
