Sarsaparilla Root Slices (Red China Root) (Smilax glabra) are the dried root slices of a traditional plant used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name Tǔ Fú Líng (土茯苓). This root is valued for its ability to eliminate dampness, resolve toxicity, support joint health, and promote detoxification, particularly in conditions involving damp-heat, skin issues, and toxin accumulation. Its nature is considered sweet, bland, and neutral, making it gentle enough for extended use while still effective in clearing pathogenic buildup.
In TCM, Tu Fu Ling enters the Liver and Stomach channels, where it helps remove dampness, relieve joint stiffness, and clear heat toxin from the body. It is traditionally used for skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, sores, and itching, as well as for syphilitic toxin patterns, urinary discomfort, and damp-heat affecting the lower body. It is also widely used for joint pain, weakness, and heaviness, especially when related to damp accumulation.
Sarsaparilla Root is commonly prepared as a decoction or tonic broth, often combined with other herbs to support detoxification, skin clarity, and musculoskeletal comfort. In folk practice, it is also consumed as a cleansing tea, especially during periods of dietary imbalance or seasonal transition.
Modern research shows that Smilax glabra contains saponins, flavonoids, resins, and antioxidant compounds with documented anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, detoxifying, and immune-supportive effects. These constituents support its traditional role in clearing toxins, reducing inflammation, and supporting skin and joint health.
Each batch of Sarsaparilla Root Slices (Red China Root) (Smilax glabra) is carefully sliced and dried to preserve its reddish-brown color, fibrous texture, and mild earthy flavor. When decocted, it produces a light, slightly sweet, neutral infusion traditionally used to clear dampness, resolve toxicity, support joint mobility, and promote overall systemic balance.
Also Known As: Tu Fu Ling, Red China Root, Chinese Sarsaparilla, Smilax Root, Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae
Nutrients: Saponins, flavonoids, phytosterols, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, trace minerals
Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tu Fu Ling is used to clear heat, resolve toxicity, eliminate dampness, and support joints and skin health. The red (unpeeled) form retains the outer skin of the rhizome, giving it a darker color and a slightly stronger, more earthy profile compared to the peeled white version. Traditionally favored in decoctions, it is associated with damp-heat conditions, skin disorders, joint discomfort, and long-term detoxifying support. Also known in the herbal trade as Chinese sarsaparilla, it is botanically Smilax glabra and distinct from other sarsaparilla species used in Western herbalism. Commonly prepared as a decoction or added to soups and herbal broths in southern Chinese dietary traditions for ongoing wellness support.
