Climbing Senecio Whole (Senecio scandens) is the dried aerial herb of a traditional climbing plant widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name Qiān Lǐ Guāng (千里光). This herb has a long history of use for its heat-clearing, toxin-resolving, and inflammation-soothing properties, particularly in conditions affecting the eyes, throat, skin, and upper respiratory tract. Its nature is bitter and cold, making it especially effective for clearing wind-heat, reducing swelling, and relieving redness and pain caused by heat-toxin accumulation.
In TCM, Qian Li Guang enters the Liver and Lung channels, where it helps clear heat from the eyes, reduce redness and swelling, relieve sore throat, and resolve toxic inflammation. It is traditionally used for red, swollen, or painful eyes, conjunctivitis, sore throat, tonsillar inflammation, cough with heat, and skin sores or boils. Its strong heat-clearing action also makes it useful for damp-heat skin conditions, itching, and ulcerative lesions when applied externally.
Folk herbal practice frequently employs Climbing Senecio as both an internal decoction and an external wash, especially for eye infections, skin inflammation, insect bites, and localized heat swelling. Eye washes and compresses are prepared with extreme care and thorough filtration to soothe heat-induced irritation and redness.
Modern phytochemical research shows that Senecio scandens contains flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, and anti-inflammatory compounds with demonstrated antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. These findings support its traditional use for heat-toxin conditions, inflammatory eye disorders, and infected skin lesions.
Each batch of Climbing Senecio Whole (Senecio scandens) is carefully harvested and dried to preserve its leafy structure, natural bitterness, and cooling energetic profile. When decocted, it produces a bitter, cooling infusion traditionally used to clear heat, resolve toxicity, soothe inflammation, and relieve redness or pain associated with wind-heat and heat-toxin patterns.

Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qian Li Guang is used to clear heat, resolve toxicity, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. It is commonly applied for sore throat, red or painful eyes, mouth ulcers, skin sores, boils, and traumatic swelling. Bitter and cooling in nature, it is often used internally for heat-toxin patterns and externally as washes or poultices for inflammatory skin conditions. It has a long history of use in southern Chinese herbal traditions, particularly for acute heat and localized inflammation.
