Chinese Motherwort Seed Whole (Leonurus japonicus) is the dried seed of the motherwort plant, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as Chōng Wèi Zǐ (茺蔚子). This small, aromatic seed has long been used for its Liver-regulating, vision-supporting, and damp-clearing properties, especially in conditions involving constrained Liver qi, eye discomfort, and mild fluid retention. Unlike the more widely known motherwort herb, the seed offers a gentler, more harmonizing action with a particular affinity for the eyes and lower body.
In TCM, Chong Wei Zi is considered acrid, sweet, and slightly cool, entering the Liver and Kidney channels. It is traditionally used to brighten the eyes, clear wind-heat affecting vision, relieve redness or dryness, ease blurred sight, and support comfort in cases of overuse or deficiency. It also helps move qi, dispel mild dampness, and promote urination, making it beneficial for edema or discomfort in the lower limbs when connected to qi stagnation or mild heat.
Historically, the seeds were decocted or steeped into vision-soothing teas and Liver-harmonizing formulas, especially for individuals experiencing eye strain, floaters, redness, or dryness from prolonged work or stress. Their smooth, dispersing qualities also make them useful in gentle detoxification and in formulas meant to encourage the smooth flow of qi throughout the body.
Modern research shows that Leonurus japonicus seeds contain flavonoids, volatile oils, and antioxidant compounds that contribute to eye health, microcirculation support, and anti-inflammatory effects, reinforcing their classical use for vision clarity and Liver regulation.
Each batch of Chinese Motherwort Seed Whole (Leonurus japonicus) is carefully cleaned and dried to preserve its lightweight texture, aromatic quality, and cooling clarity. When decocted, it produces a mild, slightly sweet infusion traditionally used to soothe the eyes, regulate Liver qi, relieve mild swelling, and promote a balanced flow of qi and fluids.
Also Known As: Chong Wei Zi, Semen Leonuri, Leonurus Seed, Motherwort Fruit
Nutrients: Alkaloids, flavonoids, diterpenoids, fatty oils, and trace volatile constituents
Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chong Wei Zi is used to clear heat, brighten the eyes, cool the blood, and promote urination. It is commonly taken for red or swollen eyes, blurred vision, and water retention patterns involving damp-heat. Milder than the herb Yi Mu Cao (the aerial parts of Leonurus japonicus), the fruit focuses on eye benefits and fluid regulation with a cooling, dispersing nature. Often paired with Ju Hua or Jue Ming Zi to enhance vision-supportive and heat-clearing effects.
