Ginger Peel Pieces (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) are the dried outer layers of fresh ginger rhizome, carefully separated and preserved for their aromatic, warming, and medicinal properties. While the inner rhizome is more widely used in cooking, the peel itself has long been valued in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and folk remedies as a lighter, more dispersing part of the plant with distinct therapeutic effects.

In TCM, ginger peel—known as Jiang Pi—is regarded as a warming yet gentle herb that helps to promote urination, reduce swelling, and regulate water balance. It is often prescribed to relieve edema, ease bloating, and harmonize the stomach. Unlike the stronger interior ginger, the peel is considered milder and is used when a subtle warming and fluid-regulating action is desired.

In Ayurveda and other herbal traditions, ginger peel has been used to stimulate digestion, warm circulation, and support detoxification. It is sometimes prepared in teas or decoctions to soothe cold-related discomforts, aid metabolism, and promote healthy elimination.

Modern studies confirm that the peel, though thinner, still contains gingerols, shogaols, flavonoids, and essential oils, compounds associated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and digestive-supporting effects. This makes ginger peel both a sustainable and potent use of the whole rhizome.

Each batch of Ginger Peel Pieces (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is carefully dried to preserve its aromatic warmth, golden-brown hue, and active compounds. When steeped, the peel produces a lightly spicy, warming infusion that can be used alone or blended with other herbs in teas, broths, or decoctions. Valued for its subtle yet effective action, ginger peel remains an important and specialized part of the herbal apothecary.

SKU: LA-5093

Also Known As: Jiang Pi, Cortex Zingiberis Rhizomatis, Ginger Skin, Sheng Jiang Pi (生姜皮)

Nutrients: Volatile oils (zingiberene, gingerol, shogaol in trace amounts), flavonoids, phenolic acids, small amounts of fiber, minerals (potassium, magnesium)

Notes: A by-product of ginger processing, separated from the inner rhizome. In TCM, Jiang Pi is considered cooler in nature than the inner ginger and is mainly used to promote urination, reduce edema, and relieve water retention. Traditionally applied for swelling, bloating, and mild digestive support. Rarely used as food; primarily a medicinal peel for decoction. Gentler in action than the rhizome. Caution: Should be used under practitioner guidance for patients with spleen yang deficiency or cold conditions.
