Hog’s Fennel Root Whole (Peucedanum praeruptorum) is the dried root of a traditional medicinal plant used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) known as Qián Hú (前胡). This aromatic root is valued for its ability to direct Lung qi downward, clear heat, transform phlegm, and relieve cough, making it especially useful for respiratory conditions with phlegm and congestion. Its nature is bitter, acrid, and slightly cold, giving it a dispersing yet clearing action that supports smooth breathing and chest comfort.
In TCM, Qian Hu enters the Lung channel, where it helps descend rebellious qi, resolve phlegm, and clear heat from the lungs. It is traditionally used for cough with thick sputum, chest fullness, wheezing, and early-stage wind-heat cough, particularly when symptoms include yellow phlegm, fever, or a feeling of oppression in the chest. Unlike warming expectorants, Qian Hu clears phlegm while cooling heat, making it well suited for hot-type respiratory patterns.
Hog’s Fennel Root is also used to dispel wind and relieve exterior symptoms, supporting relief from headache, fever, and body aches when wind-heat is present. Its aromatic quality helps open the chest and promote effective expectoration without damaging Lung qi.
Modern research shows that Peucedanum praeruptorum contains coumarins, chromones, volatile oils, and anti-inflammatory compounds with documented expectorant, bronchodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. These constituents support its traditional use for respiratory inflammation, phlegm clearance, and cough relief.
Each batch of Hog’s Fennel Root Whole (Peucedanum praeruptorum) is carefully harvested and dried to preserve its thick root form, aromatic scent, and balanced cooling potency. When decocted, it produces a slightly bitter, aromatic, cooling infusion traditionally used to clear lung heat, transform phlegm, descend qi, and ease cough and chest congestion.
Also Known As: Qian Hu, Radix Peucedani
Nutrients: Coumarins (praeruptorin A, B, C), volatile oils, flavonoids, polysaccharides
Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qian Hu is used to redirect qi downward, expel phlegm, and disperse wind-heat. It is commonly applied for cough with thick or yellow phlegm, chest congestion, wheezing, and externally contracted wind-heat affecting the lungs. Bitter and slightly cold in nature, it helps clear lung heat while promoting the smooth flow of lung qi. Often paired with herbs such as Jie Geng, Sang Bai Pi, or Gua Lou in phlegm-heat cough formulas.
