Soapberry Root Whole (Sapindus mukorossi) is the dried root of the Soapberry, or Reetha, tree—an important plant in Ayurvedic and East Asian herbal traditions known for its cleansing, detoxifying, and anti-inflammatory properties. While the fruit shells are best known for their natural soap-like qualities, the root has been traditionally used for purifying the body, clearing phlegm, and soothing skin and respiratory conditions.
In Ayurvedic medicine, Soapberry Root is considered bitter, pungent, and warming, used to balance kapha and vata doshas. It is traditionally employed to alleviate cough, asthma, and respiratory congestion, while also supporting skin health, digestion, and elimination. Decoctions of the root are sometimes applied externally to ease itching, dandruff, and minor infections, or taken internally (under supervision) to detoxify the blood and support the liver.
In Chinese herbal practice, Sapindus mukorossi is viewed as a cleansing and phlegm-resolving herb, helping to disperse stagnation, eliminate dampness, and promote clarity in the skin and lungs.
Modern phytochemical studies show that Soapberry Root contains saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and triterpenes, compounds responsible for its antimicrobial, expectorant, and detoxifying effects. These natural surfactants and antioxidants contribute to its traditional use in cleansing formulas for the respiratory system, skin, and scalp.
Each batch of Soapberry Root Whole (Sapindus mukorossi) is carefully harvested and dried to preserve its fibrous structure, earthy aroma, and active compounds. When decocted, the root produces a bitter, cleansing infusion used in traditional detox, respiratory, and purifying formulas.
Also Known As: Mu Huan Gen, Root of Soapnut Tree, Radix Sapindi, Soapberry Root
Nutrients: Triterpenoid saponins (sapindosides), flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and polysaccharides
Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mu Huan Gen is used to dispel wind, clear heat, detoxify, and reduce swelling. It is often employed for throat inflammation, toothache, and skin infections due to heat and toxicity. The root shares the cleansing and detoxifying nature of the fruit (Mu Huan Zi 木患子 / Soapnut Seed) but acts more internally to resolve phlegm and relieve pain. Sometimes used in decoctions for sore throat or as a gargle for oral inflammation. Caution: Use with care internally — contains natural saponins that can irritate the gastrointestinal tract in high doses. Avoid during pregnancy.
