Chinese Plantain Seeds Whole (Plantago asiatica) are the dried mature seeds traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name Chē Qián Zǐ (车前子). These seeds are highly valued for their ability to promote urination, clear damp-heat, support the lungs, and brighten the eyes, making them especially useful for conditions involving fluid retention, urinary irritation, phlegm-heat, and redness of the eyes. Their nature is considered sweet and cold, giving them a moistening yet draining action that clears excess without excessive harshness.
In TCM, Che Qian Zi enters the Kidney, Liver, Lung, and Bladder channels, where it helps promote the flow of urine, clear heat from the urinary tract, and drain dampness. It is traditionally used for painful or difficult urination, edema, diarrhea from dampness, cloudy urine, and urinary tract irritation, particularly when symptoms involve heat and stagnation.
Chinese Plantain Seeds are also valued for their ability to transform phlegm and clear Lung heat, helping relieve cough with thick sputum, wheezing, and respiratory congestion. In addition, they are traditionally used to benefit the eyes, especially in cases of redness, swelling, blurred vision, or irritation caused by Liver heat.
Modern research shows that Plantago asiatica seeds contain mucilage polysaccharides, aucubin, flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, and antioxidant compounds with documented diuretic, anti-inflammatory, demulcent, antimicrobial, and respiratory-supportive effects. These constituents support their traditional role in fluid balance, respiratory comfort, and urinary health.
Each batch of Chinese Plantain Seeds Whole (Plantago asiatica) is carefully cleaned and dried to preserve their small brown seeds, natural mucilage, and cooling energetic profile. When soaked or decocted, they produce a mild, slightly slippery preparation traditionally used to promote urination, clear damp-heat, soothe the lungs, and support healthy vision and fluid metabolism.
Also Known As: Che Qian Zi, Semen Plantaginis, Asian Plantain Seed
Nutrients: Mucilaginous polysaccharides, iridoid glycosides (aucubin), flavonoids, fatty oils, potassium salts
Notes: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Che Qian Zi is used to promote urination, clear heat, drain dampness, and benefit the eyes. It is commonly applied for urinary difficulty, edema, diarrhea due to dampness, and red or irritated eyes. Sweet and slightly cold in nature, it has a dual action of clearing heat while also gently binding the intestines due to its mucilage content. The seeds are typically wrapped in cloth during decoction to prevent dispersion and are widely used in both urinary and digestive support formulas.
