Rehmannia Root Cut (Rehmannia glutinosa) consists of sliced pieces of the raw rehmannia root traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as Shēng Dì Huáng (生地黄). This deeply nourishing and cooling root is a cornerstone herb for clearing heat, cooling the blood, generating fluids, and enriching yin, especially in patterns involving internal heat, dryness, irritability, or blood-level disorders. Its nature is sweet, bitter, and cold, giving it a strong moistening and heat-clearing action.
In TCM, Sheng Di Huang enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney channels, where it helps cool blood heat, relieve fever, ease restlessness, and nourish depleted fluids. It is traditionally used for high fever, thirst, dry mouth, irritability, rashes, nosebleeds, blood in the urine, and wasting-thirst disorders, particularly when heat has injured yin or entered the blood level. Its heavy, moist quality also supports constipation due to dryness.
Raw Rehmannia differs from its prepared form by being strongly cooling and more clearing, making it suitable for acute or active heat conditions rather than long-term tonification. It is often combined with herbs such as scrophularia, anemarrhena, moutan, or gardenia in formulas designed to drain heat and protect yin.
In folk and dietary practice, Rehmannia Root Cut is simmered into cooling decoctions and restorative drinks to help replenish fluids, reduce internal heat, and support recovery after febrile illness.
Modern research shows that Rehmannia glutinosa contains iridoid glycosides, catalpol, rehmanniosides, polysaccharides, and antioxidant compounds with documented anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, and blood-cooling effects. These constituents support its traditional use for yin nourishment, fluid generation, and heat reduction.
Each batch of Rehmannia Root Cut (Rehmannia glutinosa) is carefully cleaned, sliced, and dried to preserve its dark brown color, dense texture, and cooling energetic profile. When decocted, it produces a rich, earthy, cooling infusion traditionally used to clear heat, cool the blood, nourish yin, generate fluids, and soothe irritation caused by internal heat.
