Sago Palm Leaf Cut (Cycas revoluta) is the dried, cut leaf of the sago palm, a primitive cycad plant traditionally used in regional Chinese and Southeast Asian folk medicine for its blood-moving, swelling-reducing, and pain-relieving properties. While the seeds and pith of Cycas species are more commonly documented, the leaf has also been used in external and internal preparations to disperse stagnation, reduce masses, and relieve discomfort associated with trauma or obstruction. Its energetic nature is generally regarded as slightly bitter, neutral to mildly cool, and dispersing, making it suitable for stagnation-related conditions rather than deficiency.

In traditional practice, Sago Palm Leaf is used to move qi and blood, reduce swelling, and soften hardness, particularly in cases involving bruises, traumatic injury, localized pain, or fixed abdominal masses. Decoctions are sometimes employed for abdominal pain, distention, or menstrual discomfort linked to stagnation, while external applications are more common for sprains, swelling, and painful lumps.

Folk herbal use emphasizes the leaf’s role in breaking up accumulations and relieving pain, and it has historically been included in formulas addressing hard swellings, nodules, and chronic stagnation, especially when cold or immobility are contributing factors. Because of its dispersing nature, it is traditionally paired with harmonizing herbs to prevent excessive depletion.

Modern phytochemical analysis of Cycas revoluta leaves shows the presence of cycasin, flavonoids, and bioactive glycosides, compounds associated with anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activity, which help explain the plant’s traditional use in mass-dispersing and swelling-reducing applications. These same constituents also require that the herb be used with caution and proper preparation.

Each batch of Sago Palm Leaf Cut (Cycas revoluta) is carefully harvested and dried to preserve its rigid leaf structure, deep green color, and dispersing energetic character. When decocted or prepared for external use, it yields a slightly bitter, neutral infusion traditionally used to move stagnation, relieve pain, and reduce swelling or hardness.
